There are topics that go beyond the pure financial perspective of wealth management. Philanthropy is one of them.
It is often approached through the lens of giving, impact, or social engagement, but, in my experience, it plays a much deeper role: it transforms the way a family builds itself, tells its story, and envisions its future.
I have had the privilege of supporting several families on this journey, and each time, I have seen the same thing; philanthropy is a powerful catalyst for reflection and connection.
First and foremost, it is an exceptional educational tool. When children, even at a very young age, are involved in thinking about which causes to support, they are invited to see the world differently. It nurtures their critical thinking, their sense of responsibility, and their ability to make decisions. What is passed on is not only wealth, but a way of engaging with the world.
It also helps anchor family values. Many families speak of principles, commitment, humility, responsibility, and solidarity but, these values take on an entirely different meaning when they are translated into concrete actions. Philanthropy then becomes a space for expression, almost a laboratory, where these values are lived out daily.
It is also a powerful communication tool. In family environments where wealth-related topics can be sensitive, philanthropy opens a different kind of dialogue. The conversation is no longer solely about allocation or performance, but about meaning, impact, and contribution. As a result, the nature, and often the quality, of those discussions change.
Finally, philanthropy plays a key role in succession and alignment. Building a philanthropic approach means addressing fundamental questions: What do we want to do with what we have? What legacy do we wish to leave? How do we bring future generations on board? These reflections help align perspectives, structure governance, and prepare for smoother transitions.
In a world where reference points are changing rapidly and family wealth is becoming increasingly complex; philanthropy offers a stable framework. It brings people together around a project that transcends individuals.
This is precisely the conviction that drives us at Sagard Wealth. We see philanthropy not as an add-on, but as a core pillar of family strategy.
The Give Hope Charitable Foundation, which we have established, is part of this vision: to structure engagement, bring coherence, and support families on a journey that is both rigorous and deeply human.
I am convinced that philanthropy is one of the most powerful tools available to families today to bring together succession, cohesion, and impact.
